Web29 ago 2016 · I have a 2003 TJ with the 4.0l that has started producing a ticking noise from the engine area. It is an intermittent sound which has stumped me. There isn't necessarily any rhthym to when it will produce the sound but it is most prevalent at idle and low RPM especially early into drives. Web2 feb 2016 · It would go away after it warmed up. Thought it was normal as the 4.0l is a pretty notoriously noisy engine. Fast forward 2 weeks and it's sounding pretty bad. When the engine is cold it knocks pretty loud at all rps (normally shift at or before 3k rpms) but it gets a bit better when it's fully warmed up.
